We are all capable of accomplishing things in our own lives, but few people actually do ever accomplish anything, because between the ability to do something and it's actually being accomplished lies a hurdle known as motivation. If you cannot convince yourself that the culvert cleanouts need to be done, and that you need to do them now, they will not be done. If you wish you had more motivation to accomplish your goals, this article contains tips that may be able to help you find it.
Baby Steps
Often what stops people from accomplishing their goals is that they are setting the bar too high. As a result, the amount of work that needs to be done before the feeling of accomplishment sets in is usually too daunting, and work never begins. To combat this, break your ultimate goal into a series of smaller, more easily accomplished steps. For example, instead of renovating your entire home, set yourself the goal of simply refinishing your Windsor decks and go from there to the kitchen then the bathroom then the bedroom.
Rewards
Another frequently encountered problem is that often the goal that need accomplishing aren't particularly exciting, so you can't really look forward to anything but a cessation of work. As extra motivation, plan to give yourself some sort of a reward when you complete an otherwise uninteresting task. For example, if you finish cleaning out your garage, allow yourself to buy one of the Bahco tools you've been drooling over. That way by the time you reach your final goal you might have a whole set.
Partners
The prospect of laboring intensely on their own for a long time is what turns some people of the work needed to spruce up their condo. Toronto is full of these people. If you can't seem to find the motivation within yourself, borrow someone else's. Pick a friend with a lot of motivation to prod, nag, and encourage you until your task is done. Or you can partner up with another person lacking in motivation and agree to tackle your goals together.
Consequences
Because there are often no consequences to a lack of motivation, few people are able to drum up enough of it to accomplish anything. However, if you choose a goal that has consequences, or create consequences for not finishing, you can help motivate yourself.
